SC Arbor Day

Earthsense

It’s Arbor Day in South Carolina and today is the perfect day to plant a tree.  We celebrate Arbor Day on the first Friday of December because this is a good time to plant trees in our state.  Since the soil doesn’t freeze in South Carolina, trees planted now can really root into the soil through the winter so they can survive the hot dry summer.

Trees offer shade during the hot months of the year, but they also help you conserve energy, reduce soil erosion, and of course, clean the air we breathe.  What type of tree you plant will depend on your soil type, but sweetgums, dogwoods, and red maples are all good choices.  You’ll want to consider how much space you have and what your needs are.  Trees that bear fruit, seeds, and acorns could provide food and shelter for wildlife in your backyard.  Whatever tree you decide on, the important thing is that you take the time to plant a tree today or even this weekend!
