SC Botanical Garden: Birding Garden

Making It Grow Radio Minute
SC Public Radio

Hello, I’m Amanda McNulty with Clemson Extension and Making It Grow. Recently, we went to the South Carolina Botanical Garden to film their newest project – the Birding Garden. The people who take up birding are dedicated and persistent, the garden staff noticed that every morning binocular-laden folks were gathering in a particular place below the Visitor’s Center, scanning the tree line for views of year-round or migratory avians. They partnered with the School of Architecture and, building on the Gardens’ goals of sustainability and conservation, they repurposed asphalt paving, selected materials that weathered naturally to reflect the woodlands behind them, added a water feature, and choose plants that attract pollinators, provide nesting material, or food – nectar for hummers and seeds and berries for others. You can use binoculars provided if you stop for an unplanned visit – and, if you need it, use the disabilities accessible ramp.

She studied horticulture at Clemson University as a non-traditional student. “I’m so fortunate that my early attempts at getting a degree got side tracked as I’m a lot better at getting dirty in the garden than practicing diplomacy!” McNulty also studied at South Carolina State University and earned a graduate degree in teaching there.
