Making It Grow, with host Amanda McNulty

Hello, I’m Amanda McNulty with Clemson Extension and Making It Grow. With the renewed interest in home gardening comes a renewed interest in canning. For safety, some foods can only be processed in pressure canners. I have my mother’s pressure canner which must be at least forty years old. Some old canners are still safe and Clemson makes it easy to have yours checked out. Get in touch with your local extension office and they’ll tell you how to get the pressure gauge on your canner tested. Many can be replaced if they aren’t accurate. If you search “Check your canning and freezing equipment, Clemson.edu," you’ll get tips on how to safely put the bounty of your garden for use all through the year. And – what a personal gift to receive a jar of homemade jelly or pickle. I know I sure don’t need more socks or perfume.

Amanda McNulty is a Clemson University Extension Horticulture agent and the host of South Carolina ETV’s Making It Grow! gardening program. She studied horticulture at Clemson University as a non-traditional student. “I’m so fortunate that my early attempts at getting a degree got side tracked as I’m a lot better at getting dirty in the garden than practicing diplomacy!” McNulty also studied at South Carolina State University and earned a graduate degree in teaching there.
