Making It Grow, hosted by Amanda McNulty

Hello, I’m Amanda McNulty with Clemson Extension and Making It Grow. I grew up in a house my parents built in 1956 – now I guess it’s considered an old house. But unlike where I am now, we never had unwanted visitors from the outside. We did have cages with snakes (my brother was a budding herpetologist), and the occasional baby bird, until it could be on its own outdoors. One was a baby screech owl. When he was ready to make his way in the wild, we released him, and he was immediately bombarded by crows. He sat in a protected spot in a pine tree until it was dark, and then made his way out into what would be his time to hunt. Owls have soft feathers, which make their descent to capture prey silent, and they catch those animals before they can flee.

Amanda McNulty is a Clemson University Extension Horticulture agent and the host of South Carolina ETV’s Making It Grow! gardening program. She studied horticulture at Clemson University as a non-traditional student. “I’m so fortunate that my early attempts at getting a degree got side tracked as I’m a lot better at getting dirty in the garden than practicing diplomacy!” McNulty also studied at South Carolina State University and earned a graduate degree in teaching there.
