RUDY MANCKE:
This is Rudy Mancke from USC for NatureNotes.
Mike was at Columbiana with his daughter and they saw what they called a hornet. Wondered what it was and sent me a picture. It was the cicada killer wasp — one of the solitary wasps, like we mentioned this yesterday, but this is a bigger one.
It feeds on cicadas. The female digs a tunnel in the ground, paralyzes the cicadas, lays eggs on them, and then those eggs hatch and make a cicada killer wasp out of it.
The males make sounds by vibrating their bodies and that's what attracts the female.
