  • State House and Senate lawmakers were in special session this week to take up new voting maps and a anti-vaccine bill.

  • Senators stand for a moment of silence to honor the late Sen. Hugh Leatherman, R-Florence, during a special session on Dec. 6, 2021. Following the moment, Senate President Harvey Peeler resigned his leadership position as president to become eligible to serve as chairman of the powerful Senate Finance Committee, which Leatherman chaired for 20 years. Sen. Thomas Alexander, R-Walhalla, was elected unanimously to be the next Senate president.

  • House lawmakers voted 96-14 to approve their new district map in light of 2020 Census data. The map merges 10 districts, which may lead to primary challenges, and is forecasted to give Republicans a supermajority in the future. The House is made up of 81 Republicans and 43 Democrats currently.
