SC Lede: Senate Changing of the Guard

SC Senate Moment of Silence for Leatherman 12-06-21.jpg
Senators stand for a moment of silence to honor the late Sen. Hugh Leatherman, R-Florence, during a special session on Dec. 6, 2021. Following the moment, Senate President Harvey Peeler resigned his leadership position as president to become eligible to serve as chairman of the powerful Senate Finance Committee, which Leatherman chaired for 20 years. Sen. Thomas Alexander, R-Walhalla, was elected unanimously to be the next Senate president.

This episode of the South Carolina Lede for December 7, 2021 features: an update on leadership changes in the South Carolina Senate; more insight into the redistricting process; the latest research into the Omicron variant of COVID-19; and more.
