Rep. Jermaine Johnson Considers Bid for Governor
Jermaine Johnson, a South Carolina House Democratic lawmaker, announced this weekend he is considering a bid for governor in 2026. The 39-year-old legislator said Saturday he is launching an exploratory committee as he decides whether to run next year.
Congressman Clyburn Defends His Tenure in Congress
Congressman Jim Clyburn is considered the state's most powerful Democrat. During the party's convention, Clyburn defended his tenure in the US House of Representatives, saying "I will respond to the voters of South Carolina. I’ve been with them all month, and not a single one of them says to me that they think I’m too old. Everyone of them says to me, please don’t leave." Clyburn turns 85 in July.

CONFIRMED: EF1 Tornado in Clarendon County, Friday
According to the US National Weather Service in Columbia, a survey team confirmed a near- continuous swath of straight line wind damage from storms Friday. Officials said the wind damage began near Swansea with max wind speeds of 90 mph and extended southeast across Lake Marion into Clarendon County.
Official Start to Hurricane Season
Sunday marked the official start of the Atlantic hurricane season. The six-month period can bring destructive and costly natural disasters. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. (NOAA) said it expects between 13 and 19 named storms in 2025. Six to 10 of them could become hurricanes, and three to five of those could become major hurricanes.
SC Commercial Shrimp Season Begins
Another season officially starts today- South Carolina’s iconic commercial shrimp trawling season. The Department of Natural Resources sets the opening date for shrimp season, each year based on the condition of the shrimp themselves. Once DNR biologists determine that enough white shrimp have spawned in state estuaries, commercial shrimpers are given the green-light to begin trawling for the delicate crustaceans in all legal, state waters.
Upper Midlands Housing Market
The number of houses on the market in the upper Midlands continued to grow in April, especially in Lancaster County. SC Public Radio's Scott Morgan reports "Inventory in the four South Carolina counties of the Charlotte metro area reached a three- month supply in April, with 500 more homes on the market than a year earlier."
