The South Carolina House of Representatives is getting a new member. Bishopville city councilman Democrat Keishan Scott defeated Republican William Oden in a special election Tuesday night to fill an open Pee Dee-area House seat that covers parts of Kershaw and Sumter counties and all of Lee County.
Oil Exploration
The Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce is encouraging community members to voice their concerns on offshore drilling.
The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) announced they're revisiting the possibility of opening the coast to oil exploration through the recently created 11th National OCS Oil and Gas Leasing Program. As of now, offshore drilling and seismic testing are banned off the coast of Myrtle Beach. Officials said you can visit Regulations.gov to submit public comment.
Richland County Hate Crime Law
Tuesday, Richland County passed its own hate crime law, becoming the first county in the state to do so. Violators of the new crime will be charged with an additional charge of hate intimidation, a misdemeanor that can carry up to a $500 fine or imprisonment not to exceed 30 days. South Carolina is one of two states in the nation without a statewide hate crime law on the books.
FDA Updates Tomato Recall
The FDA is upgrading an ongoing recall of brand name “H-and-C farms label” tomatoes because of a class one Salmonella threat. That warning means people could become seriously ill or die if they eat the product. The tomatoes were distributed between April 23 and April 28 to stores in Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. They were sold in either small packs of three or in packaging as large as 25 pounds.
MUSC FOOD PROGRAM
For the second summer in a row, the Medical University of South Carolina is expanding its program, “Kids Eat Free at MUSC,” to serve even more counties in the state.
The program, which launched in 2015 to help children in the Greater Charleston area, is now growing to include sites in Chester, Kershaw, Lancaster and Orangeburg Counties.
