City Council Pauses Permits for Short-term Rentals
Columbia’s City Council says it will reevaluate short-term rental properties... this after a deadly shooting Friday at an Airbnb that resulted in the death of an 18-year-old and three others injured.

The City Council agreed to pause permits for short-term rentals in residential neighborhoods while it reviews its current policies.
Members said they still support rentals in Columbia.

MICHELIN Guides Selects SC for Upcoming Ceremony
The MICHELIN Guide has set a date and location for the reveal of the inaugural selection of The MICHELIN Guide American South. South Carolina will host the ceremony on November 3rd at Greenville's Peace Center.

In a statement released Tuesday, The guide said "With a strong culinary history focused on homegrown and authentic ingredients, South Carolina proved to be the perfect fit for the 2025 MICHELIN Guide American South Ceremony." Chefs will be invited to discover whether their restaurants have received a MICHELIN Star or another MICHELIN Guide distinction.

The Charleston Forum
June 15th will mark the 10 anniversary of the racially motivated attack at Mother Emanuel church in Charleston, where nine lives were lost.

One of many good things that emerged from the tragedy is the Charleston Forum- a now annual discussion with local civic leaders and elected officials. Tuesday night, the two panel discussions focused on racial disparities, justice and moving forward.

Swimming Safety
Each year, more than 4,000 unintentional drowning deaths occur in the United States. The South Carolina Department of Public Health reminds residents to practice water and swimming safety this summer.

The Department recommends the following swimming safety tips:

  • Learn CPR
  • Avoid alcohol, both for adults supervising children and for anyone engaging in water activities.
  • Take swimming lessons and learn more about water safety through resources designed for both children and adults.

Officials Warn Against Unruly Demonstrations
Many communities across the country are bracing for possible protests and demonstrations on Saturday, which is Flag Day and President Trump’s Birthday.

Tuesday, the president warned people who protest at his planned military parade will be met “with very heavy force.”

Also Tuesday, in South Carolina, Governor Henry McMaster said if protests occur in South Carolina, they better be peaceful.

McMaster urged people who might be inclined to “cause trouble” to think twice; for they will be held accountable.
