Candidates for Governor
More candidates are throwing their hat into the race for governor, with republican senator Josh Kimbrell announcing his bid in Spartanburg over the weekend.
Kimbrell said he’ll push to eliminate the income tax and cut down on agency regulations to support small businesses.
He also wants to establish an office of parental rights in the governor’s office. Kimbrell also said his family can trace its roots back to the Revolutionary War, what he says sets him
So far, only Attorney General Alan Wilson has officially launched a campaign.
New Accrediting Agency
The University of South Carolina says it is joining five other southern, public university systems to create a new accrediting agency- the Commission for Public Higher Education.
According to a provided letter that was signed by the University of South Carolina President chair of USC's board of trustees,
the University says it was invited to join the effort in response to changes to federal regulations that allow flexibility... in choosing where an institution can be accredited.
USC has been accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The signed letter says the pair will share progress updates and offer opportunities for stakeholders to provide different perspectives and ideas as the process moves forward.
GTC DUAL ENROLLMENT ACCREDIATION
Greenville Technical College’s dual enrollment program has received initial accreditation from the Accreditation Commission of the National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partners.
Greenville Technical College was one of six institutions to earn initial accreditation. The accreditation will be valid for five years. Greenville Tech will report annually to the NACEP about its dual enrollment program’s practices, across the 16 standards.
Eviction Rates
Over the past year, eviction rates in two South Carolina cities continue to outpace almost every other city tracked.
According to data from Eviction Lab, the past 12 months have seen more than 25,000 eviction filings in Greenville and Charleston and more than 109,000 filings in the two cities since tracking began in 2020
Weekend Tropics Activity
Sunday, Tropical Storm Barry formed in the Bay of Campeche near southern Mexico. According to the National Hurricane Center, Barry made landfall over Mexico's east coast and dissipated. Barry is the second named storm to form in the Atlantic Ocean this year. Tropical Storm Andrea formed last week.
Also Sunday, the formation of Tropical Storm Flossie it was located about 215 miles south-southwest of Acapulco. Forecasters say Flossie is expected to strengthen into a hurricane on today or Tuesday but will remain in open water just west of Mexico
