Category 1 Hurricane Isaias made landfall just after 11:00PM EDT in southern North Carolina near Ocean Isle Beach with maximum sustained wind speeds near 85 mph (137 km/h) and a barometric pressure of 988mb. The last August hurricane to make landfall in North Carolina was Irene in 2011.
Heavy rainfall and tropical storm-force winds are expected to continue overnight Monday for parts of the Pee Dee region. A Hurricane Warning remains in effect for Georgetown and Horry County as well as a Storm Surge Warning for areas north of Edisto Beach. Surge amounts between 3 and 5 feet are possible mainly for areas close to the North Carolina border.
Bands of moderate to heavy rainfall are expected into Tuesday morning for parts of the Pee Dee region and northeastern parts of the Midlands where 3 to 6 inches of rain could accumulate with isolated higher amounts closer to 8 inches. The threat for isolated tornadoes will remain overnight Monday as Isaias comes ashore and tracks inland. Tornadoes will be brief, but strong, during the overnight mainly in the Pee Dee region. It is advised that residents have a way to receive severe weather alerts in the event a Tornado Warning is issued.
Isaias is forecast to continue northwards through North Carolina, accelerating in speed, and approach the Northeast Tuesday afternoon. A Tropical Storm Warning extends from North Carolina to Maine, encompassing the majority of the east coast of the United States.
