He taught humor and the American novel for forty years. From 1980 until 1997 he was also writer in residence. While a visiting professor at the American University in Cairo, he “found his voice” as a writer of fiction. His first novel McAfee County: A Chronicle, set in an imaginary coastal county, was an international success. A Lion’s Share was the story of the greatest southern high school football player of all time. Angel Child was the story of a young man’s “misformative years.” Since leaving Clemson in 1997, Mark Steadman has been working on some “autobiographical fiction” and enjoying retirement in Pickens County.
