18-year-old Davion Singleton is being held at the Al Cannon Detention Center on attempted murder charges for allegedly shooting five people on the beach at the Isle of Palms on April 7, 2023.

Police say a Summerville High School senior shot five people on the Isle of Palms as students skipped school for a day at the beach.

An 18-year-old has been arrested as the sole gunman in a shooting that injured five beachgoers on the Isle of Palms, SC in April.

Authorities say Davion Bobby Del’Shawn Singleton of Charleston was a senior at Summerville High School when he drove a stolen car to take part in senior skip day at the beach and opened fire on a crowd of hundreds of people.

In a press conference Monday, Police Chief Kevin Cornett said Singleton is the fifth person to be arrested in the shootings and authorities have recovered the gun he used. But the chief offered few details about a motive or the victims.

“We know there were groups of individuals involved in disputes,” said Chief Cornett. “I believe that some (of the victims) were probably random, but not all of them.”

Four teenage boys and a 28-year-old woman were injured in the April 7th shootings that occurred just after 5 p.m. Authorities say more arrests are possible.

The shootings stunned the community which has not seen such violence at the beach. They also prompted changes on the island. The Isle of Palms now requires a permit for gatherings of 50 people or more and the police department has added a transport van as well as a K-9 unit.
