Doug Barfield, staff attorney and public information officer for the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) is recovering from what the Sheriff’s Office said is a gunshot wound stemming from an incident Wednesday night.

According to the LCSO, as the Staff Attorney and Public Information Officer, Barfield “was off duty and not on official business” at Small’s Grocery Store shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday when officers responding to multiple 911 calls regarding a shooting on N. Matson St. in Kershaw found him injured.

Due to Barfield’s employment with the Sheriff’s Office, the State Law Enforcement Division SLED will take over the investigation, LCSO said in a statement.

“It is a scary feeling knowing one of your own has been hurt and we are extremely grateful that Doug’s injuries are not life-threatening,” said Sheriff Barry Faile. “We are thankful for all the other law enforcement agencies and first responder services that came to assist. Both the agency and the Barfield family are appreciative of everyone who has reached out to offer their thoughts and prayers.”

Barfield is expected to recover fully, according to LCSO.
