Many parents and caregivers dread the arrival of the back-to-school supply list. Navigating towering aisles of binders, erasers and disinfectant wipes while trying to stay on budget is hard.
The National Retail Federation estimates the average family will spend almost $1,000 on school supplies this year. Some school districts provide supplies, and some teachers pay for classroom supplies out of their own pockets, but that’s an exception, not the norm.
Going without supplies is not an option and resources are available. Local charities, churches, and community events are good places to start. Planning ahead can help families avoid the last-minute panic and ensure students are prepared for the school year.
