Delays on many major South Carolina roads will be possible Wednesday as the state practices hurricane evacuation procedures.
South Carolina emergency management officials are coordinating a drill with local and state law enforcement agencies to simulate road closures along evacuation routes. The drill is scheduled to last the majority of the day, from 8 AM - 4 PM.
No roads or lanes will actually be closed during this exercise. However, drivers should expect additional crews and equipment on several major roadways Wednesday and are urged to use caution when traveling.
This exercise is to designed to make sure adjustments can be quickly made to reverse traffic on evacuation routes in the event of a tropical storm or hurricane. Motorists are urged to watch for crews out along I-26 between Charleston and Columbia. Delays will be possible along US 278 near Hilton Head as well as US 21 to Beaufort Wednesday. Crews are also expected to be out along US 501 near Marion, between US 378 and SC 22.
