Update: Tractor-Trailer Bridge Hit on I-20 in Aiken County

Work continues on the I-20 closure in Aiken County. Overnight, contractors successfully demolished and removed the bridge structure damaged in yesterday's tanker crash and fire.

The structure was removed less than 24 hours after the crash occurred. With the roadway cleared, crews have begun milling and are now beginning work to repave the damaged sections of I-20 so that the interstate can be safely reopened.

Drivers should expect delays and seek alternate routes if possible. A detour route is in place and drivers that are traveling through the area should slow down, follow the signed detour route and stay alert for law enforcement and crews working on the roadway.

SCDOT will continue to share updates as crews work to clean up the site and more information becomes available.
