What to know about 4 upcoming SC Statehouse special elections

Early voting in the primary races for three Statehouse special elections is now underway.

South Carolina voters in S.C. House Districts 21 and 88 and Senate District 12 can vote early in the primary election through Oct. 17.

The primary election for all three seats is Oct. 21. If necessary, a runoff will be held Nov. 4.

The special election for all three seats is Dec. 23.

And the special election for House District 98 is Jan. 6, 2026.

Early voting for the Nov. 4 primary opens Oct. 20 and runs through Oct. 31.

Here's what to know about all four Statehouse seats

Senate District 12

The Senate District 12 election will fill the vacancy opened by Spartanburg County Republican Sen. Roger Nutt, who in August resigned his seat that covers parts of Greenville and Spartanburg counties after he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.

House District 21

The special election for House District 21 will fill the vacancy left open by Greenville Republican Rep. Bobby Cox. Cox resigned his seat to run for Nutt's seat but has since said he will not run for the Senate.

Candidates:

  • Steve Nail (Republican)
  • Jack Stott (Republican)

House District 88

The special election for House District 88 will fill the seat formerly represented by Lexington Republican Rep. RJ May, who resigned his seat before he pleaded guilty to distributing child pornography. May will be sentenced to federal prison in January.

House District 98

The special election for House District 98 will fill the vacancy opened by Dorchester Republican Rep. Chris Murphy, a former chairman of the House Judiciary Committee who resigned in August.
