Former North Charleston Councilman Mike Brown withdrew his not guilty plea nearly eight months after charges were filed against him.

Former North Charleston City Councilman Mike Brown pleaded guilty Wednesday to one count of conspiracy to commit bribery after he was indicted along with several others in connection to a North Charleston corruption probe.

The plea comes nearly eight months after charges were filed against him. He initially pleaded not guilty on March 11, prompting Governor Henry McMaster to suspend him from his position on City Council until the case was resolved.

Brown faces up to five years in federal prison, a $250,000 fine, supervised release for three years and a $100 special assessment, according to the plea agreement.

A special election will take place January 13 to fill Brown’s vacant city council seat. The candidate filing period will run from November 7 to the 17.
