Congressman James Clyburn to hold book signing at the University of South Carolina

"The First Eight" explores the pivotal journey of the state's first Black congressmen who served after the Civil War.

Sixth District Congressman James Clyburn has scheduled a book signing at the University of South Carolina on Saturday, Dec. 6., spotlighting his new book "The First Eight."

Released on Nov. 11, "The First Eight" explores the pioneering experiences of South Carolina's first Black congressmen who served after the Civil War. The book chronicles the men's stories, their struggles, and contributions to American democracy.

Rep. Clyburn will join Dr. Bobby Donaldson, executive director of USC's Center for Civil Rights History and Research, for a discussion about the book beginning at 10 a.m. at Joseph F. Rice School of Law’s Karen J. Williams Courtroom at 1525 Senate St. in Columbia. The book signing will follow at 11 a.m.

The free event is open to the public, but registration is required. Anyone interested in attending may register here.

The event is presented as part of the Center for Civil Rights History and Research’s 10th anniversary celebration.
