27 more people have become ill with measles, according to an update released by the South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) Tuesday. The virus has now sickened 111 people in the current outbreak and 114 total this year.
All but one of the new cases are the result of previously reported exposures or known illnesses. The source of the one has not yet been identified.
DPH encourages those who have been potentially exposed or have symptoms to contact their healthcare provider before seeking medical attention. State health officials say this will help minimize the risk of public exposures in clinical settings.
A person with measles is contagious from four days before the rash appears through four days after its onset, meaning people with mild symptoms can spread measles before they know they are sick.
