The South Carolina Department of Public Health announced Tuesday that 26 new cases of measles have been confirmed in the Upstate since last Friday, bringing the total number of illnesses in the current outbreak to more than 200.

26 new cases of measles have been confirmed in the Upstate since last Friday, according to an update Tuesday from the South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH).

The total number of illnesses in the outbreak is now 211. 144 people are currently in quarantine, and seven in isolation.

State health officials also report that four people, both adults and children, required hospitalization because of complications from the virus.

Most of the newly reported illnesses are the result of household and community exposures, including at churches and schools.

DPH reminds that a person with measles is contagious from four days before the rash appears and can spread the virus to others before experiencing any symptoms.
