The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating what authorities are calling ‘an ambush-style attack’ over the weekend.

A Greenville police officer is recovering after what officials are calling ‘an ambush-style attack’ over the weekend.

Greenville County Sheriff Hobart Lewis says a city policeman, sitting in his patrol car, was shot several times in an ambush Sunday morning. That shooting took place around 1 a.m. and led to a chase that brought in the sheriff’s office.

“The suspect is deceased,” Lewis said in a social media video posted from the scene. “There was a brief pursuit. There was an exchange of gunfire.”

The suspect is David Lane, 42. It is not yet known whether Lane was killed in the gunfire exchange or as a result of the chase.

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the initial shooting and the events leading to Lane’s death. The officer who was attacked in his car has not been named publicly but is recovering in a hospital.

The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office is expected to release a full incident briefing on Feb. 25.
