Two of South Carolina's top lawmakers say the palmetto state should be the home for the U.S. Coast Guard's new training base.

Senator Tim Scott (R) and Representative Joe Wilson (R) urged the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to choose Beaufort as the site of the new base.

In a letter sent Monday, the pair write, "Beaufort has proven itself to be a reliable and mission-ready military community. In addition to Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, the city is home to Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, which trains and graduates thousands of Marines each year."

The U.S. Coast Guard issued a request for information late last year seeking potential locations to host the new facility. Beaufort is on a shortlist of several locations across the country.
