The South Carolina Department of Public Health released South Carolina flu data for the first week of January.

State health leaders released data on flu spread from Jan. 4 to Jan. 10. While the number of confirmed new cases dropped, the number of deaths jumped.

Compared to data from the week before, the Department of Public Health reports a 1,560 decrease in the amount of confirmed cases, at a total of 2,145.

Hospitalizations are down, too, at 501 confirmed patients. The prior week saw 838 hospitalizations, the health agency reports.

However, the report didn't show positive changes in all categories. Flu-related deaths in South Carolina jumped from nine to 19.

There are 45 reported flu deaths this season, with one being a child.

Influenza spread in South Carolina is still categorized as widespread by health officials.
