The incident happened early Wednesday morning on Johns Island.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Charleston County.

The incident happened early Wednesday morning on Johns Island after deputies first responded to a shots fired call shortly after 9 p.m. Tuesday on Edenborough Rd. but did not find a suspect.

Later, just before 3 a.m. Wednesday, deputies received another call that the male suspect had returned to the area. While in route, investigators say officers attempted to stop the suspect's vehicle at Maybank Hwy. and River Rd., but a pursuit began.

The pursuit ended near Edenborough Rd. and Caroline Ln. That's when, investigators say the suspect fled on foot, and deputies ran after him.

During the foot chase, investigators say the suspect fired at deputies hitting one in the chest. Deputies returned fire, killing the suspect. The injured deputy was treated at the scene and released.

In addition to SLED's investigation, the CCSO Professional Standards Division will conduct an internal investigation. The deputies involved have been placed on paid administrative leave, pending further review.
