According to an update from the South Carolina Department of Public Health, most of those deaths were caused by hypothermia.

The South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) reports that 17 people across the state died as a result of winter storm-related conditions.

Winter storms Fern and Gianna swept through South Carolina in back-to-back weeks in late January, bringing ice, snow, widespread power outages and dangerous travel conditions statewide.

DPH first reported a winter weather-related death in a Jan. 26 news release. The victim, a 96-year-old woman from Greenwood County, died from hypothermia.

Of the 17 reported deaths, 11 were attributed to hypothermia.
