The new law requires anyone who works at least 10 hours per week serving alcohol for on-site consumption — as well as managers who supervise alcohol service — to complete a state-approved server training program by March 2, 2026, or within 30 days of being hired.

The deadline is next week for servers and managers to complete South Carolina's newly required alcohol server training program.

Anyone who works at least 10 hours a week serving alcohol or oversees alcohol service for on-site consumption must be compliant by Monday, March 2, or within 30 days of employment.

The training is part of a new state law passed last year. Individuals must complete one of the approved programs listed on the South Carolina Department of Revenue's website to receive the required SCDOR Alcohol Server Certificate.

Penalties for failing to complete the mandatory training include:

  • A $500 fine per violation for allowing individuals who are not compliant to serve alcohol for on-site consumption
  • A $100 fine per violation for failing to maintain or produce a copy of an alcohol server certificate

For additional information about the new law, important resources or to register for one of the required training programs, visit SCDOR's website.
