The late Rev. Jesse Jackson, who died Feb. 17 at age 84, will be memorialized in Columbia next week with services at the Statehouse and a local church.
The Greenville native and civil rights trailblazer will lie in state at the Statehouse Monday, March 2. The day of remembrance in the state's capital city will come after Jackson is memorialized in Chicago, which is where he lived for decades.
Jackson's family and several U.S. lawmakers had requested to have his body lie in honor at the Capital, but House Speaker Mike Johnson denied that request and cited precedents of that honor.
In South Carolina, Jackson will have a full day of services, according to communication from the Rainbow Push Coalition and social media posts from organizations involved.
At 9 a.m., Leevy's Funeral Home at 1831 Taylor St. in Columbia will hold a processional to the Statehouse, according to the funeral home's Facebook page.
Plans for Monday are still being finalized but are tentatively set to begin with a 10 a.m. private service of remembrance reserved for "family, clergy and invited guests."
Sometime between 10:30 to 11 a.m., a public service will commence. The service will include remarks from Gov. Henry McMaster and reflections from "local state and federal leaders." A wreath placement ceremony and a musical selection by "Allen University and/or Benedict College Choir" will, too, be part of the service. Those services are slated for the South Carolina State Capitol Rotunda.
To end of the day of scheduled memorials, Brookland Baptist Church will host a church service at 1066 Sunset Blvd. in West Columbia. The service would last from 4 to 6 p.m., according to the same Leevy's Funeral Home social media post.
