Former Charleston County School Board member Kevin Dion Hollinshead faces a five-count federal indictment that alleges bribery, as a well as bank and wire fraud.

Federal authorities say Kevin Dion Hollinshead used his public office for personal gain.

A Charleston County School Board member has resigned following a federal indictment that alleges he used his public office for personal gain.

Specifically, the five-count indictment says 64-year-old Kevin Dion Hollinshead of North Charleston accepted a bribe in exchange for his support of a construction company that was appealing a failed bid for a project.

Federal authorities also say Hollinshead lied when he applied for COVID relief loans in 2020 and 2021, then used the money for personal expenses, like a medical procedure at a clinic Mexico. He’s charged with both wire and bank fraud in connection with those loans.

Charleston County School District Board of Trustees Chair Pam McKinney said in a statement the board cannot comment on Hollinshead’s resignation but added, “The process to fill the vacancy will proceed in accordance with South Carolina law.”

Hollinshead is expected to appear in federal court in Charleston Wednesday. If convicted, he faces 30 years behind bars.
