A Beaufort County woman is charged with fraudulently receiving $23,598 in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. The South Carolina Department of Social Services (DSS) on Monday announced the arrest of 40-year-old Lasonya Renee Morton.
Morton is charged with one count of Fraudulent Acquisition or Use of Food Stamps greater than $10,000.
According to the arrest warrant, on five occasions between Nov. 1, 2021 and Oct. 31, 2024, Morton knowingly provided false information on SNAP recertification forms by failing to report her husband's income from his employment with Lowes and Venture Inc. As a result, Morton received an over issuance of benefits that she was not entitled to.
Morton was booked at the Beaufort County Detention Center.
The DSS Office of the Inspector General reminds South Carolinians that reports of fraud can be made to the office online or by calling 800-616-1309.
