SLED: Two Greenville officers, suspect recovering after gun goes off during detainment struggle

The incident happened Monday on Greenville's North Main Street.

SLED agents are investigating an officer-involved shooting on Monday that left two Greenville police officers and a suspect injured.

Xavier Washington, 20, has been charged with attempted murder, resisting arrest with a deadly weapon, and assaulting a police officer.

According to investigators, the incident happened while one officer was attempting to detain Washington for alleged public intoxication. SLED reports that Washington, who was handcuffed, attempted to take an officer's gun. The gun fired and struck one officer in the arm, breaking a bone, before grazing Washington’s leg.

As the struggle continued, Washington allegedly bit the second officer’s hand.

Both officers and Washington were treated at a local hospital and have since been released. Washington was booked into the Greenville County Detention Center.

The incident in Greenville County is the tenth officer involved shooting in South Carolina this year. , there Last year, there were 45 officer involved shootings in South Carolina—including one involving Greenville police.
