Early morning earthquake rattles near Winnsboro

The 2.3 magnitude earthquake happened at 5:18 a.m. about 11 miles from Winnsboro.

The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 2.3 earthquake in South Carolina Tuesday morning.

The quake hit at 5:18 a.m. about 11 miles from Winnsboro and had a depth of 3.4 miles.

According to the South Carolina Emergency Management Division, approximately 10 to 15 earthquakes are recorded annually in the state with about three to five strong enough to be felt by residents.

In 2024 there were 30 recorded quakes, in 2025 there were over 20, and more than five have already been recorded this year. To see a map of recent earthquakes and for resources you can visit this link.
