Newberry Electric Cooperative will receive $2.4 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as part of nearly $300 million in federal funding to support past disaster recovery efforts across the southeast.
Newberry Electric serves communities in four counties including Newberry, Fairfield, Laurens and Lexington. The money will be used to restore the cooperative's electrical system infrastructure back to its pre-disaster footprint.
Other approved projects in the southeast include:
- $76.5 million to Alabama healthcare providers for costs associated with COVID-19
- $14.7 million to Georgia for Hurricane Helene debris removal in Augusta-Richmond County
- $6.6 million to Mississippi healthcare providers for costs associated with COVID-19
- $2.5 million to Tennessee to restore the town of Jonesboro's water system
FEMA is addressing a backlog of disaster relief funding requests because of depleted finances. In all, FEMA is providing $1.2 billion for more than 200 public assistance projects nationwide.
