South Carolina State University continues to strengthen campus safety—now through a stronger collaboration with law enforcement and emergency medical partners.

SC State recently hosted a multi-agency law enforcement summit to include state and local agencies from the Midlands to the Lowcountry. University President Alexander Conyers stressed the significance of the partnerships to ensure the safety of students at both Claflin and SC State.

“When you combine the students, faculty and staff at both universities, we make up a large portion of the people who live, work and play here in the city. We want them to feel just as safe on our campuses as any place else they may go,” Conyers said.

SC State has taken significant measures to strengthen campus safety following fatal shootings at the school last October and again this past February.

The increased collaboration will also support safety measures related to the upcoming football season and larger campus events. A few of the public safety priorities outlined include increased law enforcement presence and police patrols, improved traffic and pedestrian control measures and a mobile emergency operations center.

Additionally, President Conyers said the university will place fencing around Hugine Suites, the student housing complex where the deadly shootings happened. The goal is to complete the Hugine Suites project by homecoming. Fencing will eventually extend around the entire campus once funding is secured.
