As data centers become more of a conversation, questions about what they are and what local governments can (or should) do about them are growing.

County planners upheld a denial for one data center while state officials said they won't regulate another.

South Carolina Public Radio's Reagan Knight talks with Scott Morgan about two decisions this week focusing on data centers in Spartanburg County.

On Monday, county planners upheld an earlier decision to block the development of the proposed Lighthouse data center project. On Thursday, the state Public Service Commission said that a legal challenge to the nature of the under-construction Valara data center did not hold up.

Reagan Knight is the All Things Considered host for South Carolina Public Radio. Born and raised in Florida, Reagan found his love for public media while studying at the University of Florida. During his time at the university's public radio station, WUFT, he covered stories ranging from hurricanes, trains, toll roads, and took pride in being a voice for smaller communities. After graduating from UF, Reagan became the Creative Services Director for a cluster of commercial stations in Florida. He eventually returned to public media by joining SC Public Radio in 2024.
