The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that began in Florence County and ended in Williamsburg County on Sept. 9. The suspect, 40-year-old Nelson Boyd Chavis, was shot and died on the way to the hospital.
According to SLED, Florence deputies were attempting to stop Chavis on Lake City Highway near Johnsonville and serve an arrest warrant when he fled in his car. Deputies pursued across county lines into Williamsburg where Chavis jumped out of his vehicle and ran into the woods near Muddy Creek Road.
SLED says there was an exchange of gunfire between Chavis, who was armed with a handgun, and deputies. Chavis was shot and died on the way to the hospital. No law enforcement officers were injured.
SLED's investigation is ongoing. The officer-involved shooting is the 27th in the state this year.
