Seven car suppliers located in the Upstate on Wednesday announced they will expand to support electric vehicle maker Scout Motors.
Scout said the expansion will create 200 new jobs, an investment of more than $82 million spread across locations in Duncan, Piedmont and Spartanburg.
The suppliers will produce components for Scout's Travel SUV and Terra truck, both assembled at the company's $2 billion Blythewood production center, which Scout has said will employ 4,000 people.
"These supplier expansions are another step toward reshoring American manufacturing, creating good jobs, and developing the domestic capabilities needed to support production for decades to come," Scott Keogh, Scout's president and CEO, said in a statement. "We’re proud to support that work taking root right here in South Carolina."
Gov. Henry McMaster told reporters Tuesday that Scout's announcement further highlights South Carolina's economic growth.
"And Scout's presence here, regardless of exactly where their suppliers go, it is good news for South Carolina," McMaster said.
The Upstate expansion joins Scout's stretch into Orangeburg County, announced last year in a $120 million investment by supplier Sodecia Aapico, which will create up to 392 jobs and make ladder frames for Scout cars at its 400,000-square-foot facility.
Scout said vehicle production will continue into next year, with deliveries to customers expected to start in 2028.
