The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources is investigating a die-off of Canada geese in Charleston and Mount Pleasant. Bird flu is suspected.

Avian influenza (bird flu) is suspected in several waterfowl deaths in Charleston and Mount Pleasant. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) is investigating.

The agency says the die-off involves Canada geese. A specimen is being tested to help determine a definitive cause.

The City of North Charleston issued a public health notice Monday after several dead geese and ducks were found in Quarterman's Pond.

Cases of bird flu can increase during seasonal bird migration. SCDNR encourages anyone who might come across dead or sick birds to leave them alone and keep pets away.

Information about the occurrence of bird flu in wildlife can be found on the U.S. Department of Agriculture's website. For more about potential human risks and precautions, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
