The ordinance prohibits new smoke and vape shops from opening within 1,000 feet of schools, churches, daycares and parks.

Mount Pleasant Town Council has approved the first reading of a new zoning ordinance that would restrict where smoke and vape shops can operate within town limits.

The ordinance prohibits new smoke and vape shops from opening within 1,000 feet of schools, churches, daycares and parks. The vote follows public backlash over a proposed vape shop planned near Moultrie Middle School.

Town leaders say the measure aims to reduce children’s exposure to vaping products, synthetic cannabinoids and kratom. If passed, existing shops would have five years to comply.

A second reading is scheduled for Dec. 7.
