    Redistricting plans face busy week in South Carolina
    South Carolina's work to draw new districts after last year's U.S. Census should get closer to completion this week. On Monday, the state Senate committee handling redistricting will hold a public meeting about its proposed U.S. House maps released last week. Then on Wednesday, the full House returns to the Statehouse to take up their 124 redrawn districts. The South Carolina League of Women Voters have criticized the new maps for both the U.S. House and the South Carolina House. They say they concentrate more on protecting Republicans and incumbents than providing for fair, competitive races.

    South Carolina abortion appellate hearing moved to January
    Appellate arguments over a lawsuit challenging South Carolina's abortion law have been pushed into the new year. The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals says oral arguments have been rescheduled for the last week in January. They had originally been planned for next month. Planned Parenthood is suing South Carolina over the measure that requires doctors to perform ultrasounds to check for a so-called "fetal heartbeat."

    Port of Savannah accelerating expansion amid cargo surge
    The Georgia Ports Authority is accelerating a $150 million expansion at the Port of Savannah amid surging cargo volumes that have kept ships waiting at sea. The state agency's board approved plans Monday to boost port capacity for cargo containers by 25% within six months. Authority Executive Director Griff Lynch said more than a third of that new space should be available by January to help alleviate backlogs.
