Tiger swallowtail butterflies
Papilio glaucus, the eastern tiger swallowtail, is a species of butterfly native to eastern North America. It is one of the most familiar butterflies in the eastern United States, ranging north to southern Ontario, Canada, and is common in many different habitats. It flies from spring until fall, during which it produces two to three broods.

Style fights - silly, but productive
It occurs to me, when considering the history of music, that the endlessly recurring and often bitter fights over musical styles and trends have actually been quite productive, if only because they’ve acted as spurs for composers in supposedly opposing camps to produce their best work.

It occurs to me, when considering the history of music, that the endlessly recurring and often bitter fights over musical styles and trends have actually been quite productive, if only because they’ve acted as spurs for composers in supposedly opposing camps to produce their best work. And then, of course, it turns out that later generations usually have no trouble enjoying all the styles in question, and the old disputes, even though productive, just seem silly to them.

“T” is for Township plan
“T” is for Township plan. For the first forty years of South Carolina’s existence, almost ninety percent of settlers lived within thirty miles of Charleston. Since the colony had had a Black majority since 1706, Governor Robert Johnson proposed a plan for the orderly settlement of the Carolina frontier in an attempt to rectify the colony’s racial imbalance with mass White immigration and to provide a front line of defense against the Spaniards and Indians.

Tagging monarch butterflies
When we were filming the pollinator garden at Irmo Middle School, kids were throwing balls and racing around after their lunch break. Another athletic skill some students develop is based on activity in the garden, trying to capture adult butterflies with insect nets. Monarchs get a sticker applied to a spot on their wing, tags supplied by the national Monarch Watch tagging program.

The caterpillar and the assassin bug
A listener was happy to spot a monarch butterfly caterpillar on her milkweed plant. But, there was another vistor on the plant, not so welcome.
