Making It Grow logo

Hello Gardeners, I’m Amanda McNulty with Clemson Extension and Making It Grow. My neighbors for several years were a constant source of new experiences. A visit to Tractor Supply ended up with a movable chicken coop added to the trampolines, zip lines, and fire pit that kept adults and children entertained. We often baby sat for the world’s most perfect dog, Clovis (don’t tell them but we let him sleep in the bed) and checked on the chickens, too, who free-ranged during the day. Over the years, I guess they went through five dozen chickens as dogs, racoons and who knows what else seemed to be impossible to exclude from their nighttime coop. But one gal survived event after event. She even crossed the railroad cut in Saint Matthews and was brought home by another chicken aficionado who figured out where she lived and he gave her the name we use today, Fontella Bass.

She studied horticulture at Clemson University as a non-traditional student. “I’m so fortunate that my early attempts at getting a degree got side tracked as I’m a lot better at getting dirty in the garden than practicing diplomacy!” McNulty also studied at South Carolina State University and earned a graduate degree in teaching there.
