AMANDA MCNULTY:
Hello, I'm Amanda McNulty of Clemson Extension and Making it Grow.
There are lots of different kinds of corn — some used for feed, some used in cardboard production, some special ones used for corn cob pipes. Popcorn isn't just one particular variety; apparently there are tons of different popcorns out there.
In pre-Columbian times, some were used for soup, some for headdresses, and others were turned into beer. Even now, one of these popcorns you'll find south of the border is different from ours, and it's called Inka Nuts. They pop, but expand less.
I can't find it available unpopped, but there are places to get it pre-popped, one at a fancy grocery store in Columbia, SC. Now that it's gotten my attention, I'm going to put it on my fancy store shopping list. That's cheaper than a trip across the border, unless I get too many other fun things while I'm there.
