Hello, I'm Amanda McNulty of Clemson Extension and Making It Grow.
People like to put different toppings on their popcorn. Homemade Cracker Jack would be molasses and roasted nuts put in it. The gold standard for popcorn is salt and butter, which works best if you carefully melt the butter because it burns so easily. What they give you at the movie theaters is butter-flavored vegetable oil.
Some of my back to nature cousins — who could make sauerkraut to die for — served me some fried tofu with nutritional yeast. The tofu I could take with a grain of salt, but the nutritional yeast spoke my name. That's my favorite topping. Since I fix popcorn in a big pot with oil on the bottom, the kernels have enough fat on them so that the nutritional yeast sticks. Not the case with those fancy air poppers. If I'm having popcorn, I want the full monty.
