Making It Grow, hosted by Amanda McNulty

Hello, I’m Amanda McNulty with Clemson Extension and Making It Grow. The South Carolina Botanical Garden is a treasure located on the campus of Clemson University. Although near the foothills of the mountains, they’ve managed to create examples of the many ecosystems of our state – including a long-leaf pine savannah. They also have an oak-hickory forest. Interestingly, pine pollen isn’t the usual hay fever culprit –it’s oaks and hickories. While there, you can see a house there built of heart pine in 1716 in Berkeley County for a rice planter. When the Santee-Cooper Lakes were created, this house was going to be flooded. Because of its historical significance and beauty, it was moved to Clemson as another of the garden’s jewels, and is open for tours. If you’re also a birder, take your binoculars and stop by the new Bird Garden too.

Amanda McNulty is a Clemson University Extension Horticulture agent and the host of South Carolina ETV’s Making It Grow! gardening program. She studied horticulture at Clemson University as a non-traditional student. “I’m so fortunate that my early attempts at getting a degree got side tracked as I’m a lot better at getting dirty in the garden than practicing diplomacy!” McNulty also studied at South Carolina State University and earned a graduate degree in teaching there.
