RUDY MANCKE:
Hi, this is Rudy Mancke from USC for NatureNotes.
Mary lives in the Port Royal area and has a lot of cypress wetlands around. She sent me a picture of a bird that she had seen there, just double checking on what it might be. Had a really bright orange beak with a yellow mark on the end, dark on the rest of the body with a line of white on each side.
Old days, you'd call it a common gallinule, now we call it a common moorhen. It's part of the rail family. And not only was the adult there, but also the young bird too.
