401k's and IRA’s are the largest retirement savings vehicles in the country, and other than Social Security, the only source of retirement savings for many households. Yet studies consistently show that Americans are greatly unprepared for retirement, and as a whole are almost $8 trillion behind in adequate savings. The federal government is taking notice, and one way they believe they can help bridge that gap is by making sure that financial advisors who are providing retirement advice are putting investors' interests ahead of their own.
