“R” is for Rogers, George Washington, Jr. [b. 1958]. Football player. Raised primarily by an aunt in Duluth, Georgia, Rogers became a prominent high school football player--and through the guidance of his coach overcame academic difficulties to qualify for a college grant-in-aid. In 1977, he became the University of South Carolina’s prize recruit. In 1979 he was named an All-American and in 1980 won the Heisman Trophy. Rogers closed his collegiate career with a school record 5,204 yards and a staggering 954 carries. Drafted by the New Orleans Saints in 1980, he led the National Football League in rushing his rookie year. Traded to the Washington Redskins, he was a member of their 1987 Super Bowl championship team. George Washington Rogers, Jr., is a member of the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame.
